Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The text between the square brackets was not in the manuscripts; we have supplied it from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis".
Grading: (2) This chain is very da'if (weak),
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ahmad bin 'Ubayd al-Nahwi has weakness, and about Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (who is Ibn Abd Allah al-Mulayki al-Taymi) al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": al-Mulayki is "wahin" (very weak). And the report has a break, namely between Talhah (who is Ibn Abd Allah bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr al-Siddiq) and his father's grandfather Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). It is indeed so, for Abu Zur'ah al-Razi said: Talhah bin Abd Allah's narration from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq is mursal.
Note / Clarification: The author will mention the intermediary between the two of them in the next narration, but its chain too is nothing to rejoice over.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 1/ 121 and 7/ 81, Ibn Bishran in "al-Amali" (452), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5600), al-Quda'i in "Musnad al-Shihab" (218) and al-Khatib in "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" 1/ 24 - 25, via Abu 'Amir al-'Aqadi, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari also narrated it in "al-Tarikh" 1/ 121 and 7/ 81, Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (2747), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (17/ 507), Ibn Bishran (453), Abu Nu'aym (5600), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (7519) and al-Khatib 1/ 24, via various routes from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This group (of narrators) was contradicted by another group, who narrated it with the same chain but made it part of the Musnad of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) himself.
Reference / Source: Thus Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i narrated it in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (111) - and via him al-Khatib 1/ 24 - via al-Musayyab bin Sharik; Abu al-Shaykh in "al-Amthal" (216) and al-Khatib 1/ 23 - 24 via Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Abi Fudayk; and al-Khatib 1/ 24 via Adam bin Abi Iyas; all three of them from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr, from Muhammad bin Talhah, from his father, from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), as marfu'.
Grading: These three routes are each weaker than the other, so they cannot be relied upon, and they too all revolve around al-Mulayki.
Reference / Source: This narration was recorded by Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak in "al-Birr wa al-Silah" (94), and via him by Imam al-Bukhari in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (43) and Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (2748), from Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman, from Muhammad bin So-and-so bin Talhah, from Abu Bakr bin Hazm, from a man among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: I will spare you (the trouble): the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Affection is inherited."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz al-Mizzi gave a biography of the narrator "Muhammad bin So-and-so" and identified Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman, who narrates from him, as "Ibn Abi Dhi'b"; al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar followed him in this in "al-Taqrib" and declared this "Ibn So-and-so" majhul (unknown), and in our view this is correct. Then Ibn Hajar retracted in "Tahdhib al-Tahdhib" and considered it most likely that the two narrations are one, relying on al-Bayhaqi's narration in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (7520), which he narrated from al-Bukhari and in which the name is given as "Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin So-and-so bin Talhah"; then he said: he may be "Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Talhah al-'Abdari", since Ibn al-Mubarak narrated from him.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: al-Bayhaqi's narration in "al-Shu'ab" from al-Bukhari appears the same way in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (1/ 121): "Muhammad bin Talhah bin Abd al-Rahman bin So-and-so bin Talhah", but this contradicts all those who narrated it from Ibn al-Mubarak whose takhrij we mentioned, among them al-Bukhari himself in "al-Adab al-Mufrad", where with all of them the chain runs: "Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman from Muhammad bin So-and-so". So what occurs in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" is perhaps an old error by the copyists, and Allah the Exalted knows best.
