حدّثنا محمد بن صالح بن هانئ، حدّثنا الحسين بن الفضل البَجَلي، حدّثنا سليمان بن حَرْب، حدّثنا أبو عوانة، حدّثنا داود بن عبد الله الأَوْديّ، عن عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله المُسْلي، عن الأشعث بن قيس، قال: تضيَّفتُ عمرَ بنَ الخطاب، فقام في بعض الليل فتناول امرأتَه فضربها، ثم نادانيّ: يا أشعثُ، قلت: لبَّيك، قال: احفَظْ عني ثلاثًا حفظتهن عن رسول الله ﷺ: "لا تَسألِ الرجلَ فيمَ يَضْرِبُ امرأتَه، ولا تَسأله عمَّنَ يَعتمِدُ من إخوانِه ولا يعتمدُهم، ولا تَنَمْ إِلَّا على وِترٍ" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Ash'ath bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I was a guest of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He got up during part of the night and struck his wife. Then he called me: "O Ash'ath!" I said: "At your service." He said: "Memorize from me three things which I memorized from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): 'Do not ask a man why he strikes his wife; do not ask him about those of his brothers (friends) on whom he relies or does not rely; and do not sleep until you have prayed witr.'"
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده ضعيف لجهالة عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله المُسلي فقد تفرد بالرواية عنه داود بن عبد الله الأوديّ، وذكره أبو الفتح الأزدي في "الضعفاء"، وقال: فيه نظر، وأورد له هذا الحديث.
Grading: (1) This chain is da'if (weak) because Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah al-Musli is unknown. Dawud bin Abd Allah al-Awdi is alone in narrating from him. Abu al-Fath al-Azdi mentioned him in "al-Du'afa'" and said: "He is questionable (fihi nazar)", and he cited this very hadith of his.
أبو عوانة: هو الوضاح بن عبد الله اليَشكري.
Note / Clarification: Abu 'Awanah is al-Waddah bin Abd Allah al-Yashkuri.
وأخرجه أحمد (1/ 122)، وأبو داود (2147)، وابن ماجه (1986)، والنسائي (9123) من طرق عن أبي عوانة، بهذا الإسناد. ولم يذكر أحد منهم قصة الاعتماد على الإخوان وجعلوا مكانها: ونسيتُ الثالثة، إلّا رواية أبي داود والنسائي فروايتهما مختصرة بذكر قصة ضرب المرأة.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (1/ 122), Abu Dawud (2147), Ibn Majah (1986) and al-Nasa'i (9123) narrated it via various routes from Abu 'Awanah, with this chain.
Details of the narration: None of them mentioned the story of "relying on brothers"; instead they said in its place: "I forgot the third." Except for the narration of Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i, which is abridged, containing only the story of "striking a woman".
