It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Soon my Ummah will be afflicted by the disease of the earlier nations." The Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is the disease of the earlier nations?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ingratitude, excessive exultation, greed for amassing wealth, deceiving one another in worldly matters, mutual hatred and envy, until transgression and oppression arise."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word is like this, whereas in the source works it is "al-tanafus", and this appears to be the correct form.
Grading: Its chain can possibly be graded hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Sa'id al-Ghifari - he is also called Abu Sa'd, and this is the preferred view, as stated in the sources for his biography - two narrators narrated from him and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", so he may possibly be a narrator of hasan level. All the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). (2543). Technical note / Defect ('illah): And al-'Iraqi declared its chain "jayyid" (good) in his takhrij of "Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din" (3/ 187). Also see Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-'Ilal" (2543). Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Dhamm al-Baghy" (2) and "al-'Uqubat" (261), Ibn Waddah in "al-Bida'" (227), Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-'Ilal" (2543) and al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (9016), via various routes from 'Abdullah bin Wahb, with this same chain. All of them added at its end the words: "Then there will be al-harj (killing)." Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani said: No one narrated it from Abu Sa'id al-Ghifari except Abu Hani'. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (6064) and Muslim (2563) with the wording: "Do not envy one another, do not turn your backs on one another, do not hate one another, and be, O servants of Allah, brothers." (2558). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And a similar narration is from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (6065) and Muslim (2558). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And from al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) there is a narration in Musnad Ahmad (3/ 1412) with the wording: "The disease of the nations before you has crept into you: envy and hatred, and hatred is the shaver", etc. Its chain has a break (inqita'). Note / Clarification: The word "al-ashar" is like "al-batar" (exultant arrogance) in both pattern and meaning, and it is said that it is "intense batar". "Al-batar" means: transgressing (being ungrateful) upon receiving a blessing. Note / Clarification: "Al-baghy": oppression and wrongdoing. In the source works there is the addition: "Then there will be al-harj", and al-harj means killing.
