It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will not be believers until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of something by which you will come to love one another?" The Companions said: "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Spread the greeting of salam among yourselves and love will arise among you. By the One in whose Hand is my soul! You will not enter Paradise until you show mercy to one another." The Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah! All of us are merciful." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is meant is not only your own (particular) mercy, but mercy to the people at large, mercy to the people at large."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (4) In the manuscripts this word is "tahabbu" (without the nun), whereas the correct and standard form is what we have established in the text, with the nun.
Note / Clarification: The object of the verb is not mentioned here; in some of the source works the word is "khassatan" (in particular) and in some it is "ashabahu" (his companions).
Grading: This chain is da'if (weak) because of i'dal (a gap of two or more consecutive narrators) between al-Walid bin Abi Hisham and Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although in the source works al-Hasan al-Basri appears as the link between the two of them, that too is "munqati'" (broken), because al-Hasan al-Basri did not hear from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, as 'Ali bin al-Madini and Abu Hatim said. And Abu Zur'ah said: he did not even see him (Abu Musa). Ibn Abi Hatim reported this in "al-Marasil". Note / Clarification: Ibn Wahb is "'Abdullah al-Misri", Haywah is "Ibn Shurayh bin Safwan al-Misri", and Ibn al-Had is "Yazid bin 'Abdullah bin Usamah". Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani in his "Musnad", as stated in "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" (5155), from Muhammad bin 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Darawardi; and by al-Nasa'i (5928), Abu Bakr bin Khallad al-'Attar in his "Hadith" (16) and al-Na''al in his "Mashyakhah" (page 115-116) via the route of al-Layth bin Sa'd; both of them (al-Darawardi and al-Layth) narrate it from Yazid bin al-Had, from al-Walid bin Abi Hisham, from al-Hasan al-Basri, from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him). 15/ (9084). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Muslim (54) with the wording: "You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not (truly) believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread the greeting of salam among yourselves." See the rest of its takhrij in "Musnad Ahmad" (15/ 9084).
