Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7497

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have two neighbours; to which of them should I give a gift?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one whose door is nearer to you."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), because Talhah bin Abdullah bin Awf is among the narrators whose narrations the two Shaykhs agreed upon.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The wording from the beginning of this hadith up to here is missing from manuscript (Z); we have supplied it from manuscripts (S) and (M) and from "Ithaf al-Maharah" (21746). Also, in manuscripts (S) and (M) the word "Shu'bah" in the second place is corrupted into "Sa'id".

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: In the chain, "Talhah bin 'Abdullah" is "Ibn 'Uthman bin 'Ubaydullah bin Ma'mar al-Qurashi al-Taymi".
Reference / Source: Via the first route it was narrated by al-Bayhaqi (7/ 28) from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim.
Reference / Source: And the second route is in "Musnad Ahmad" (42/ 25423) from Muhammad bin Ja'far, with his chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam al-Bukhari (2595) from Muhammad bin Bashshar, from Muhammad bin Ja'far, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad (42/ 25423, 25536, 25615 and 43/ 26026) and al-Bukhari (2259, 6020) via various routes from Shu'bah, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Dawud (5155) via the route of al-Harith bin 'Ubayd from Abu 'Imran al-Jawni, with this same chain.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here the author (al-Hakim) (may Allah have mercy on him) made an oversight, for he had indicated shortly before that this is Talhah bin 'Abdullah al-Taymi, whereas "Ibn 'Awf" is al-Zuhri, and he is a different person; we have given the takhrij of his narration under the previous hadith. Both of them (al-Taymi and al-Zuhri) are narrators of Sahih al-Bukhari, not of Muslim. See "Fath al-Bari" (2559 and 2595) (for further detail).
