حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا بحر بن نصر بن سابق الخَوْلاني، حدثنا عبد الله بن وَهْب، أخبرني يحيى بن أيوب، عن عبيد الله بن زَحْر، عن القاسم بن عبد الرحمن، عن عُقْبة بن عامر قال: لقيتُ رسولَ الله ﷺ فَبَدَرتُه فأخذتُ بيده، وبَدَرَني فأخذ بيدي، فقال: "يا عقبةُ، ألا أُخبرك بأفضلِ أخلاقِ أهل الدنيا والآخرة؟ تَصِلُ من قَطَعَك، وتُعطي مَن حَرَمَك، وتَعفُو عمن ظلمَك، ألا ومن أراد أن يُمَدَّ في عمره ويُبسَطَ في رزقِه، فليَصِلْ ذا رَحِمِه" (1).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I hastened to take hold of his hand, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) also hastened to take hold of my hand. Then he said: "O Uqbah! Shall I not tell you of the best character of the people of this world and the Hereafter? It is that you join the one who cuts you off, give to the one who deprives you, and forgive the one who wrongs you. Indeed! Whoever wishes that his life be lengthened and his provision be expanded, let him join his ties of kinship."

(1) شطره الأول حسن، وشطره الثاني صحيح لغيره، وهذا إسناد منقطع بين عبيد الله بن زحر - وهو ضعيف - والقاسم بن عبد الرحمن الشامي صاحب أبي أمامة، بينهما عليُّ بن يزيد الأَلهاني، وهو ضعيف أيضًا، وجاء على الصواب بذكر الألهاني بينهما في "جامع ابن وهب" (486 أبو الخير). وقد خالف ابن وهب في إسناده سعيدُ بن أبي مريم - وهو ثقة حافظ - فرواه عن يحيى بن أيوب عن ابن زحر عن الألهاني عن القاسم عن أبي أمامة عن عقبة بن عامر، فذكر الألهانيَّ على الصواب، وزاد في الإسناد بين القاسم وعقبة أبا أمامة صُدي بن عجلان، وهو الصواب، فقد تابعه غير واحد على ذلك كما سيأتي.
Grading: Its first part is hasan and its second part is "sahih li-ghayrihi".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is munqati' (broken), because there is a missing link between 'Ubaydullah bin Zahr - who is da'if (weak) - and al-Qasim bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Shami (the companion of Abu Umamah); in fact between the two of them is "'Ali bin Yazid al-Alhani", and he too is da'if. In "Jami' Ibn Wahb" (486, in the narration of Abu al-Khayr) al-Alhani is correctly mentioned between the two. Then Ibn Wahb was contradicted by "Sa'id bin Abi Maryam" - who is thiqah and a hafiz - who narrated it from Yahya bin Ayyub, from Ibn Zahr, from al-Alhani, from al-Qasim, from Abu Umamah, from 'Uqbah bin 'Amir; thus he mentioned al-Alhani correctly and also added "Abu Umamah Sudayy bin 'Ajlan" in the chain between al-Qasim and 'Uqbah, and this is correct, since several narrators have corroborated him in this, as will follow.
وأخرجه تامًّا ومختصرًا ابن أبي الدنيا في "مكارم الأخلاق" (19)، والروياني في "مسنده" (157)، والبيهقي في "شعب الإيمان" (7587) من طريق سعيد بن أبي مريم بالإسناد المذكور.
Reference / Source: It was narrated in full and in abridged form by Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (19), al-Ruyani in his "Musnad" (157) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (7587) via the route of Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, with the chain mentioned above.
وأخرجه أحمد 28/ (17334)، والطبراني في "الكبير" 17 / (39)، وفي "مكارم الأخلاق" (56) من طريق معان بن رفاعة، والطبراني 17/ (740)، وابن عدي 5/ 179، وأبو نعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" (5387) من طريق أبي عبد الرحيم خالد بن أبي يزيد، وابن عدي في "الكامل" 5/ 165 من طريق عثمان بن أبي عاتكة، ثلاثتهم عن علي بن يزيد الألهاني، بشطره الثاني، إلّا رواية الطبراني الأولى فقد ساقها بتمامها، وسقط من سندها الألهاني.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad (28/ 17334), and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (17/ 39) and "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (56), via the route of Ma'an bin Rifa'ah; also by al-Tabarani (17/ 740), Ibn 'Adi (5/ 179) and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5387) via the route of Abu 'Abd al-Rahim Khalid bin Abi Yazid; and by Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (5/ 165) via the route of 'Uthman bin Abi 'Atikah. All three of these narrators narrate it from 'Ali bin Yazid al-Alhani. In these only the second part is narrated, except for al-Tabarani's first narration, in which he gave it in full, but "al-Alhani" has dropped out of its chain.
وأخرج شطره الأول أحمد (17452) من طريق فروة بن مجاهد، عن عقبة بن عامر. وسنده حسن.

وسلف حديث أبي هريرة عند المصنف برقم (3956) بنحو الشطر الأول من حديث عقبة هذا، وانظر حديث معاذ بن أنس عند أحمد 24/ (15618).
Important point: Similar to the first part of this hadith of 'Uqbah bin 'Amir, the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) has already appeared with the author (al-Hakim) at number (3956). Also see the hadith of Mu'adh bin Anas in "Musnad Ahmad" (24/ 15618).
ويشهد لشطره الثاني ما تقدم عند المصنف (7467) و (7468).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its second part is supported by the narrations that have already appeared with the author at numbers (7467) and (7468).
