Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7441

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: O Hani! What are the people saying? Hani said: People think that you have some knowledge from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that you do not disclose. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Something apart from the rest of the people? He said: Yes. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Show me the sword. So I gave him the sword, and he took out from it a scroll on which was written: This is what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah curse whoever slaughters for other than Allah, and whoever takes as his patrons other than his own patrons; and may Allah curse the one disobedient to his parents; and may Allah curse the one who tampers with the boundary markers of the land."

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word is written "fa-u'titu" (so I was given).

Grading: This hadith is sahih, and this chain can possibly be graded hasan because of "Hani', the client (mawla) of 'Ali".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-'Ala' is alone in narrating from him (Hani') (and Abu al-'Ala' is 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ya'qub, the client of al-Huraqah); Ibn Hibban mentioned him (Hani') in "al-Thiqat", and he has been corroborated (i.e. there is support for his narration).
Reference / Source: Ibn Wahb recorded it in his "al-Jami'" (150 - in the narration of Abu al-Khayr) and Imam al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (8/ 229) by way of Sulayman bin Bilal; and al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad 'Ali, page 170) and Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (6934) by way of Muhammad bin Ja'far; both of them (Sulayman and Muhammad) narrate it from al-'Ala' bin 'Abd al-Rahman, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (2/ 855, 954, 1307), Muslim (1978), al-Nasa'i (4496) and Ibn Hibban (5896, 6604) recorded it by way of Abu al-Tufayl 'Amir bin Wathilah, from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Details of the narration: This narration does not mention "the curse on one who takes as patrons (mawali) other than his own patrons", but it adds these words: "La'ana Allahu man awa muhdithan" (Allah curses whoever shelters an innovator/criminal).
Reference / Source: The basis of this hadith is in "Sahih al-Bukhari" (1870), narrated by way of Yazid bin Sharik from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Note / Clarification: The word "manar al-ard" in the hadith is the plural of "manarah". These are the markers placed between two boundaries. Abu 'Ubayd says in "al-Gharib" (3/ 183): They are set up on the boundaries of land between one neighbour and another; changing them means that a person moves them into his neighbour's land in order to take a part of his land, so he alters the marker.
