Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7390

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to breathe three times (outside) the vessel while drinking, and he would say: "This way is more thirst-quenching, more healing from illness and more wholesome (easier to digest)." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "And I too breathe three times while drinking."
This hadith is sahih (authentic), but they did not record it with this addition (the practice of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) himself); they only recorded, through the narration of Thumamah from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that "He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to breathe three times in the vessel."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This is a "sahih hadith".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain is "hasan" on account of Abu 'Isam al-Basri, and he is not Khalid bin 'Ubayd al-'Ataki who is known to be weak; Abu 'Isam is also corroborated, as the author indicated after it. Abu Ma'mar in the chain is 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr bin Abi al-Hajjaj al-Basri.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in 20/ (13207) and 21/ (13635), Muslim in (2028) (123), al-Tirmidhi in (1884) and al-Nasa'i in (6861) through various routes from 'Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in 19/ (12186) and 20/ (12923), Muslim in (2028) (123), Abu Dawud in (3727) and al-Nasa'i in (6860) through the route of Hisham al-Dastuwa'i, and Ibn Hibban in (5330) through the route of Shu'bah; both of them narrate from Abu 'Isam.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): What the author says here is an oversight, because this narration is in Muslim through the same route, as we have explained in the takhrij, and it also contains the mentioned addition.

Reference / Source: This narration is in Sahih al-Bukhari (5631) and Sahih Muslim (2028).
