Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 705

Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you about the prayer of the hypocrite? He delays the Asr prayer until, when the sun has become (yellow) like the fat covering a cow's stomach, he prays it."
Imam Muslim recorded a narration of Sayyiduna Anas with the same meaning, which mentions the sun turning yellow; that narration is a sahih (authentic) supporting narration (shahid) for this one.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the printed copy (B) there is confusion here and a transposition of the text (words placed before or after their proper position), whereas the other manuscripts we have are free of this and give the text correctly.

Grading: Its chain is hasan, if Allah wills.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Hibban mentioned the narrator Abd al-Salam bin Abd al-Hamid in "al-Thiqat" and said that he sometimes erred. Ibn Adi mentioned him in "al-Kamil" and said that Abu Arubah al-Harrani held a poor opinion of him, but Ibn Adi said: in my view there is no harm in his hadith, and I have not seen any munkar narration of his.
Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni (993) narrated it from Muhammad bin Abi Bakr, from Abd al-Salam bin Abd al-Hamid, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: 'Al-tharb' is the thin fat that covers the rumen and the intestines. The meaning of the hadith is that praying was forbidden at the time when the sun becomes like 'tharb', i.e. when at sunset its light scatters and falls on one place and not another (like layers of fat), as Ibn al-Athir mentioned in "al-Nihayah".

Reference / Source: This narration is in Muslim's "Sahih" at number (622).
