Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 703

Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We used to pray Asr with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then we would slaughter a camel and divide it into ten portions, then cook it and eat the cooked meat before the sun set.
Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim agreed on Rafi' bin Khadij's narration about Maghrib, that after the prayer we could see where our arrows landed; but this narration about praying Asr early is on their condition, yet they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here 'Abu al-Najashi' is Ata' bin Suhayb, the freed slave of Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Ahmad 28/ (17275) and (17289), al-Bukhari (2485), Muslim (625) and Ibn Hibban (1515) narrated it through various routes from al-Awza'i (Abd al-Rahman bin Amr), with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hakim's presenting this hadith as an addition (istidrak) to the two Shaykhs is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part, since it is already found in their books.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word was distorted (tahrif) into 'al-Asr'; the correct word is the one mentioned in the narration of the "Sahihayn" (al-Bukhari and Muslim), and the correction has been made from it.

Reference / Source: This narration is with al-Bukhari at number (559) and with Muslim at number (637).
