Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-Aziz bin Muslim (al-Qasmali) was inconsistent (idtirab) in this chain: sometimes he narrates it like this, and sometimes, in agreement with the senior students of al-A'mash, with the chain "Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, from Alqamah, from Ibn Mas'ud", and this is the "mahfuz" (preserved, correct) version. As for the narration of Habib bin Abi Thabit from Yahya bin Ja'dah, what is preserved is that it is "mursal" without mention of Ibn Mas'ud, as al-Thawri and others narrated it, and as Imam al-Daraqutni said in "al-Ilal" 13/(3360). Moreover, Yahya bin Ja'dah did not meet Ibn Mas'ud.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at 6/(3789) by way of Arim (Muhammad bin al-Fadl), from Abd al-Aziz bin Muslim, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 7/(3913) and Ibn Hibban (5680) narrated it by way of Abd al-Aziz bin Muslim; Ahmad 7/(3947), Abu Dawud (4091) and al-Tirmidhi (1998) by way of Abu Bakr bin Ayyash; Muslim (91) (148), Ibn Majah (59) and (4173) and Ibn Hibban (224) by way of Ali bin Mushir; and Ibn Majah (59) and (4173) by way of Sa'id bin Maslamah; all four from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, from Alqamah, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Details of the narration: This narration is reported from Ibn Mas'ud in abridged form with these words: "No man will enter Paradise who has an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart, and no man will enter the Fire who has an atom's weight of faith in his heart".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Fudayl bin Amr corroborated al-A'mash on this chain and text; it was narrated by Imam Ahmad 7/(4310) and Imam Muslim (91) (149).
Important point: This same narration will come with the author in full, by this route, at number (7552).
Important point: A similar narration will come by way of Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman al-Himyari from Ibn Mas'ud at number (7554).
Note / Clarification: "Shirak al-na'l" is the leather strap of the sandal that lies over the top of the foot.
Note / Clarification: "Batar al-haqq" means rejecting the truth and refusing to accept it out of haughtiness and arrogance.
Note / Clarification: "Izdira' al-nas" means looking down on people.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Hakim made a mistake here in two matters: first, Imam Muslim did record this hadith from Ibn Mas'ud by another route, as mentioned above; second, Yahya bin Ja'dah has no narration in al-Bukhari or Muslim.
