It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three whom Allah loves and at whom He looks and smiles: one is the man who, when the army loses its footing, stands firm and fights behind them for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, putting his life on the line."
This is a sahih (authentic) hadith, and the two of them used all of its narrators as evidence, but they did not record it. In this chapter they only recorded, in the chapter on jihad, the hadith of Abu al-Zinad from al-A'raj from Abu Hurayrah: "Allah looks at two men and smiles."

Grading: Its chain is hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Fudayl bin Sulayman is one of those narrators whose hadith is taken into account in corroborations and supporting reports and so rises to the level of hasan, and this narration is of that kind; all the remaining narrators are thiqah. Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it (as found in Ibn Kathir's Jami' al-Masanid, 11904), and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (983), by way of Yusuf bin Ya'qub. Details of the narration: Al-Tabarani mentioned Ibrahim bin Na'ilah together with Yusuf, and the rest of the hadith with them is: "Either he is killed or Allah helps him and suffices him; then Allah says: Look at My servant, how he held himself firm for My sake. And the man who has a beautiful wife and a soft, fine bed, yet he gets up at night, leaves his desire, remembers Me and converses with Me in private, although had he wished he could have slept. And the man who is on a journey with a company of riders who stay awake and tire themselves and then fall asleep, but he gets up before dawn (in worship), in ease or in hardship". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) found in Musnad Ahmad 7/(3949), Abu Dawud (2536) and Ibn Hibban (2557). Grading: Its chain is jayyid (good).
