Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 689

It is narrated from one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "Which deeds are the most excellent?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Performing the prayer at the beginning of its time."
Imam al-Hakim says: The narrator here is Abdullah bin Mas'ud, because all the narrators agree on this from Abu Amr al-Shaybani.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hasan bin Ali al-Ma'mari was contradicted in the wording: al-Daraqutni narrated it in his "Sunan" (968) from al-Husayn bin Isma'il (who is the judge and 'allamah al-Mahamili), from Abu Musa Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, with the words "the prayer on its time", and that is the preserved version.
Reference / Source: Likewise Ahmad 38/ (23120) narrated it from Muhammad bin Ja'far, with this same chain.
