Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 688

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Which deeds are the most excellent?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Performing the prayer at the beginning of its time." I asked: "Then what?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Striving (jihad) in the path of Allah." I asked: "Then what?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Being good to parents." (Ibn Mas'ud says:) Had I asked for more, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would have told me more.
Imam al-Hakim says: Hajjaj bin al-Sha'ir is a reliable hafiz, and Imam Muslim used his teacher Ali bin Hafs as evidence.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is strong (qawi).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The word "the beginning of the time" in it is shadh, while the preserved wording is "the prayer on its time", and this is how a large group of narrators narrated it from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj.
Reference / Source: Ahmad 7/ (3890) and (4186), al-Bukhari (527) and (5970), Muslim (85) (139), al-Nasa'i in "al-Kubra" (1593) and Ibn Hibban (1477) narrated it through various routes from Shu'bah, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: In all these sources the wording of the hadith is "al-salatu 'ala waqtiha" (the prayer on its time).
