It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These toilets are frequented (by jinn and devils), so when one of you goes there, let him say: 'A'udhu billahi min al-rijs al-najis al-shaytan al-rajim' (I seek refuge in Allah from the impure, the filthy, the accursed Satan)."
Imam Muslim narrated through Qatadah (by this route), and Imam Bukhari used Amr bin Marzuq as evidence; however, there is disagreement over this narration from Qatadah.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih, but with this specific wording this narration is shadh (anomalous, not preserved). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Dawud (6) narrated this narration from Amr bin Marzuq, with this same chain, in these words: "fal-yaqul: a'udhu billahi min al-khubuthi wa al-khaba'ith" (let him say: I seek refuge in Allah from the male and female evil jinn), and it is these words that are mahfuz (preserved). Reference / Source: Likewise Ahmad 32/ (19286) and (19332), Ibn Majah (296), al-Nasa'i (9820) and Ibn Hibban (1408) narrated it through various routes from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj. Reference / Source: Likewise al-Nasa'i (9821) narrated it via Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah, from Sa'id bin Abi Arubah, from Qatadah bin Di'amah al-Sadusi. See also the narration after it. Note / Clarification: 'Al-hushush' means toilets or places for relieving oneself; its singular is 'hash'. Note / Clarification: The word 'muhtadarah' in the hadith means that devils are present in these places.
