Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), a man was wounded and then had a wet dream. He was ordered to take a ritual bath; he bathed and died. When this news reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They killed him, may Allah destroy them! Was not the cure for ignorance to ask?" Then it reached us that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about this, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If only he had washed his body and left his head, where the wound was."

Explanation & Benefits

Important point: The passage from his words "Bishr bin Bakr is thiqah and ma'mun (reliable)" up to here has dropped out of manuscript (B) and the printed edition.
Grading: This hadith is hasan, like the previous one, except for the "balagh" (report that "it reached us") at its end, which is weak because it is mursal. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The one who says "it reached us" here is Ata' bin Abi Rabah, as stated explicitly in this very narration in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 1/ 227, where he narrates it from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim and others from Abu al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub, with this chain. Details of the narration: The same is found in the following narration of Hiql (bin Ziyad) with the author, and in the narration of Abd al-Hamid bin Abi al-Ishrin in Ibn Majah (572); see its full takhrij there.
