Sayyidah Hamnah bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I used to suffer from very heavy and severe istihadah (bleeding due to illness). I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask for the ruling and to inform him, and I found him (peace and blessings be upon him) in the house of my sister Zaynab bint Jahsh. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I suffer from very heavy and severe istihadah; what is your view about it? It has kept me from prayer and fasting." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I advise you (to use) cotton, for it absorbs the blood." She said: "It is far more than that; I bleed profusely." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will command you to do two things; whichever of them you do will suffice you, and if you are able to do both, you know best." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is one of the strikes of Satan. So count six or seven days as your menstruation, according to the knowledge of Allah, then take a ritual bath. When you see that you have become pure and clean, pray for twenty-four or twenty-three nights and their days, and fast, for that will suffice you. Do this every month, just as women do in the days of their menstruation and purity. And if you have the strength to delay Zuhr and hasten Asr, take a ritual bath and combine Zuhr and Asr; then delay Maghrib and hasten Isha, take a ritual bath and combine the two prayers, then do so, and fast as well if you are able." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And this (second way) is the more beloved of the two to me."
The two Shaykhs took the narrations of Sayyidah Aishah about istihadah, but they did not record this detail from Hamnah bint Jahsh, nor the narration of Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil, although he is among the nobles of Quraysh. Supporting reports for it are also narrated from Sayyidah Aishah through other chains.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Aqil is alone in narrating it; he is himself weak, and though he is taken into consideration in corroborating chains and supporting reports, no one corroborates him here, and a solitary narration (tafarrud) of someone like him is not accepted. Reference / Source: Ahmad (45/ 27474), Abu Dawud (287) and al-Tirmidhi (128) recorded it via Abu Amir al-Aqadi, with this chain. Grading: Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih" (though in the editors' view this is questionable because of the solitary narration). Reference / Source: Ahmad (27144) and Ibn Majah, in two places (622, 627), recorded it via two routes from Abd Allah bin Aqil, with it. Note / Clarification: "Al-kursuf" means cotton, and "al-thajj" means flowing, or flowing profusely. Note / Clarification: On his words "a kick from the kicks of Satan", Ibn al-Athir writes in "al-Nihayah" that the root meaning of "rakd" is striking with the foot; what is meant here is Satan harming and hurting the woman. The meaning is that through this ailment Satan found a way to confuse her in the matters of her religion, her purity and her prayer, until he made her forget her habit, so that it became, as it were, a kick from his kicks.
(333). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The words "from Urwah" have dropped out of the printed edition. Reference / Source: Via this route, the narration is in al-Bukhari (228, 306, 320, 331) and Muslim (333).
