Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 530

Asim bin Laqit bin Sabirah narrates from his father, who was the delegate of Banu al-Muntafiq, that he and a companion of his came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) looking for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) was not there. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) fed them dates and porridge. Only a short while had passed when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived with a dignified gait. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Has anyone given you food?" I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. Then I said: O Messenger of Allah, tell us about the prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perform ablution thoroughly, pass (water) between the fingers, and sniff water into the nose thoroughly, unless you are fasting."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This teacher of the author (al-Hakim) is well known as "Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i", the author of "al-Ghaylaniyyat". In the biographical sources, "'Abduwayh" is what is known in his lineage in place of "'Amr", while the author alone mentioned "'Amr" in his lineage.
Note / Clarification: For his biography, see "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" 16/ 39.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our manuscripts the word is written "yatatalla'" (with the letter ta'), which gives no meaning here, so it has been corrected to "yataqalla'" from the sources of takhrij.
Note / Clarification: "Yataqalla'" refers to the strength of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) gait, as though he lifted his feet from the ground with full strength. For further detail, see the hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) coming later at number (7943).

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in 29/ (17846) and Imam Abu Dawud (143) through Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in 26/ (16384), Abu Dawud (144) and al-Nasa'i (6665) through various routes from Ibn Jurayj ('Abd al-Malik bin 'Abd al-'Aziz).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of Imam Ahmad the narrator was in doubt, and there the words are "'Asim bin Laqit, from his father or from his grandfather". Imam al-Nasa'i did not mention the incident of the wudu'.
Details of the narration: With Imam Ahmad and Abu Dawud this narration is found at length, similar to what will come later with the author at numbers (2950) and (7271).
Note / Clarification: "Al-'asidah" is flour that is mixed with ghee and cooked. (In the text, 'yulatt' means to moisten or soften the flour; it is a slightly lighter process than 'bass', i.e. mixing the flour thoroughly with ghee.)
