حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا أَسِيد بن عاصم، حدثنا الحسين بن حفص، عن سفيان. وأخبرنا أبو العباس محمد بن أحمد المحبوبي، حدثنا أحمد بن سَيّار، حدثنا محمد بن كَثير، حدثنا سفيان، عن إسماعيل بن كثير، عن عاصم بن لَقِيط بن صَبِرَة، عن أبيه: أنه أتى النبيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ أشياء، فقال له النبي ﷺ: "أَسبغِ الوضوءَ وخَلِّلِ الأصابعَ، وإذا استنشقتَ فبالِغْ، إلّا أن تكون صائمًا" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح، ولم يُخرجاه، وهو في جُمْلة ما قلنا: إنهما أَعرضا عن الصحابي الذي لا يروي عنه غيرُ الواحد (2)، وقد احتجَّا جميعًا ببعض، هذا النوع، فأما أبو هاشم إسماعيل بن كثير القارئ، فإنه من كبار المكيين، روى عنه هذا الحديث بعينه غيرُ الثَّوريِّ جماعةٌ منهم ابن جُرَيج وداود بن عبد الرحمن العطَّار ويحيى بن سُلَيم وغيرهم. أما حديث ابن جريج:

Asim bin Laqit bin Sabirah narrates from his father that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned some things, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Perform ablution thoroughly, pass (water) between the fingers, and when you sniff water into your nose, do so thoroughly, unless you are fasting."
This hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it. It is among the narrations they left because only one narrator reports from this Companion, even though they both used some other narrations of this kind as evidence. Isma'il bin Kathir is one of the senior scholars of Makkah, and besides al-Thawri, Ibn Jurayj, Dawud bin Abd al-Rahman and others also narrated from him.
This hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (26/ 16380, 16381), al-Tirmidhi (38) and al-Nasa'i (99) narrated it through the route of Waki' bin al-Jarrah, and Imam Ahmad (26/ 16838) and al-Nasa'i (3035) through the route of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi; both of them narrate it from Sufyan al-Thawri with this same chain.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih".
