Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Shall I not show you how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ablution?" Then he called for a vessel of water, took a handful of water, rinsed his mouth and sniffed water into his nose with it. Then he took another handful, put both hands together with it and washed his face. Then he took another handful and washed his right hand, then took another handful and washed his left hand. Then he took a fistful of water, shook it off, and wiped his head and ears with it. Then he took another handful and sprinkled it on his right foot while he was wearing sandals, and did the same with the left foot, and wiped the undersides of the sandals. Then he said: This is how the ablution of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with this wording. They both agreed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) washed the limbs once each, but that narration is brief, whereas this narration of Hisham bin Sa'd explains it in full detail.

Explanation & Benefits

15/ 519 - 520. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted (tahrif) into "al-'Abdi", whereas the correct form is "al-'Anazi", and it appears correctly in several places in the author's (al-Hakim's) work. Note / Clarification: For his biography, see Imam al-Dhahabi's "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (15/ 519-520).
Important point: The space between square brackets [ ] in the text was blank in the manuscripts; we have completed it from Imam al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (10759), where he narrated it through Bishr bin Musa with the same chain and text.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, but without the mention of "wiping over the sandals". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hisham bin Sa'd is alone in reporting the words about wiping over the sandals, and he is considered weak when he narrates alone (in cases of tafarrud). Reference / Source: Through the route of Hisham bin Sa'd, Imam Abu Dawud recorded it (137) in the narration of Muhammad bin Bishr from him. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Hisham bin Sa'd was contradicted by Sulayman bin Bilal (in Musnad Ahmad 4/ 2416 and al-Bukhari 140) and by Muhammad bin 'Ajlan (in al-Nasa'i 106 and Ibn Hibban 1078 and 1086); all of them narrated it from Zayd bin Aslam, but they did not mention wiping over the underside of the sandals.
Reference / Source: This narration is found with Imam al-Bukhari (157), but not with Imam Muslim.
