Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 469

Iyad relates: I asked Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): One of us prays but does not remember how many rak'ahs he has prayed? He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: "When one of you prays and does not remember how much he has prayed, let him make two prostrations (of forgetfulness) while sitting; and if Satan comes to one of you and says, 'You have broken your ablution,' let him say (in his heart), 'You are lying,' unless he perceives a smell with his nose or hears a sound with his ear."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and both of them used Iyad bin Abdullah bin Sa'd bin Abi Sarh as evidence.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the word "al-Hasan" has been corrupted into "al-Husayn", while in the printed editions the word "bin" has been corrupted into "thana" (haddathana).

Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi", but this chain is da'if (weak) because 'Iyad (Ibn Hilal) is unknown (jahalah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The view of the author (al-Hakim) that he is 'Iyad bin 'Abd Allah bin Sa'd bin Abi Sa'd, whose narrations are in al-Bukhari and Muslim, is not correct; for in several routes from Yahya bin Abi Kathir his name appears explicitly as "'Iyad bin Hilal".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded it at 18/ (11468) through Shayban al-Nahwi, and at (11500, 11501), and Abu Dawud at (1029), through Aban bin Yazid al-'Attar; Shayban named him "'Iyad bin Hilal al-Ansari", while Aban named him "Hilal bin 'Iyad".
Reference / Source: A narration of similar meaning was recorded by Imam Ahmad 18/ (11912, 11913) and Ibn Majah (514) through Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), though there is criticism (weakness) in this chain.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration is supported by the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin Zayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) found in al-Bukhari (137) and Muslim (361).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Imam Muslim (362) is also a supporting report for it.
