Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 468

Asim bin al-Mundhir bin al-Zubayr relates: I entered a garden with Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Umar where there was a water tank in which lay the skin of a dead camel, and he performed ablution from it. I said: Are you performing ablution from it even though the skin of a dead camel is in it? He narrated to me, through his father (Ibn Umar), this hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When water is equal to two or three large jars (qullatayn), nothing makes it impure."
In the narration of Hammad bin Salamah, Affan bin Muslim and others did not mention the words "or three".

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih except for the words "or three (qullahs)". This chain is hasan because of 'Asim bin al-Mundhir.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad 8/ (4753) and Ibn Majah (518) through Waki', by Imam Ahmad 10/ (5855) from 'Affan bin Muslim, and by Abu Dawud (65) from Musa bin Isma'il; all three narrate it from Hammad bin Salamah with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The words "or three" are not present in the narration of Musa bin Isma'il, and the story of the garden is not mentioned in the narrations of Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah.
Note / Clarification: "Al-maqra" means a basin in which water is collected.
