Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 461

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Performing ablution fully in disagreeable conditions (such as cold or illness), walking to the mosques, and waiting for the next prayer after a prayer wash away sins just as water washes away dirt."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi", but the chain under discussion is da'if (weak) because of a break between Ibn Abi Dhubab and Sa'id bin al-Musayyab.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Between the two of them is a narrator named "Abu al-'Ayyas" (with the dotted ya', as al-Haythami recorded its spelling in "Majma' al-Zawa'id" 2/ 36), who is "majhul" (unknown); a group of narrators reported it this way from al-Harith bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Dhubab, as will come.
Reference / Source: The hadith of Safwan bin 'Isa was recorded by Imam al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (2639) from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: It was also recorded by Abu 'Ubayd in "al-Tuhur" (14), 'Abd bin Humayd (91), al-Bazzar (528), Abu Ya'la (488), Ibn Shahin in "al-Targhib fi Fada'il al-A'mal" (36), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" 1/ 432-433, and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (477), through various routes from Safwan bin 'Isa.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bazzar (529) through 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, by al-Barqani in his additions to al-Daraqutni's "al-'Ilal" 3/ 223 (374) through 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Darawardi, and by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (2485) through Abu Damrah Anas bin 'Iyad.
Details of the narration: All three of these narrators report it from al-Harith bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Dhubab, from Abu al-'Ayyas, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab.
