Muhammad bin Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) says: "The Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) is in fact Lut bin Faran bin Azar bin Nahur, and he was the nephew of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), the Friend of the Most Gracious. And al-Mu'tafikah (the towns that were overturned) were the people of Lut."

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification (textual verification): In the manuscripts there was a blank in place of the name "Yahya", but since the author (al-Hakim) has brought out several reports through his narration and everywhere calls him "Yahya bin Sasawayh", we have inserted the name "Yahya" in the blank.
Note / Clarification (text): In manuscript (S), a mark above this word indicates that in one copy it is with "mim" instead of "fa'".
Status of the narrator: Muhammad bin Humayd (al-Razi) is a hafiz, but he is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, he is not alone in narrating it from Salamah bin al-Fadl; rather "Muhammad bin 'Isa bin Ziyad al-Damighani" corroborated him, as will come. Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tarikh" 1/ 243-244 from Muhammad bin Humayd, likewise, but without the words: "al-Mu'tafikah are the people of Lut". Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim narrated it in his "Tafsir" 9/ 3050 from 'Ali bin al-Husayn bin al-Junayd, from Muhammad bin 'Isa al-Damighani, from Salamah bin al-Fadl, likewise, without the words: "al-Mu'tafikah are the people of Lut". Note / Clarification: The statement "al-Mu'tafikah are the people of Lut" was given with a chain by Ibn Ishaq from Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi (see Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim 6/ 2067 and Tarikh al-Tabari 1/ 306), by two routes from Muhammad bin Ishaq.
