The son of Ka'b bin Malik narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you conquer Egypt, accept the counsel to treat the Copts well, for they have a covenant of protection and ties of kinship." Al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The kinship is that the mother of Isma'il (peace be upon him), (Hajar, peace be upon her), was from among them.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement over it from al-Zuhri as to whether it is "mawsul" (connected) or "mursal". Those who narrated it as "mawsul": al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (2364, 2365), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (19/113) and Ibn Shahin in his "Hadith" (in the recension of al-Muhalli, 15) via al-Awza'i; al-Tahawi (2366), al-Tabarani (19/111) and al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/322) via Ishaq bin Rashid; and al-Tabarani (19/112) via al-Walid bin Muslim, from Malik bin Anas. All three (al-Awza'i, Ishaq bin Rashid, and Malik in the narration of al-Walid bin Muslim from him) narrate it from al-Zuhri, likewise. Note / Clarification: Others contradicted them and narrated it as "mursal": Reference / Source: Details of those who narrated it as "mursal": Ibn Sa'd in his "Tabaqat" (10/203) from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, from Ma'mar bin Rashid and Muhammad bin 'Abdullah; Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam in "Futuh Misr" (pp. 49-50) from Ashhab bin 'Abd al-'Aziz and 'Abd al-Malik bin Maslamah, from Malik bin Anas; al-Baladhuri in "Futuh al-Buldan" (p. 216) and al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/322) via 'Abdullah bin Wahb, from Malik bin Anas and al-Layth bin Sa'd; Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam in "Futuh Misr" (p. 50) from 'Abdullah bin Salih and Muhammad bin Rumh, from al-Layth bin Sa'd, and (p. 50) via Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah; and Muhammad bin Ishaq in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (as in "Sirat Ibn Hisham" 1/7). Via Ibn Ishaq it was also narrated by Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam (p. 50), al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (1/247) and Ibn al-Bukhari in his "Mashyakhah" (836). Details of the narration: All of them (Ma'mar, Muhammad bin 'Abdullah, Malik in the narration of those mentioned from him, al-Layth bin Sa'd, Ibn 'Uyaynah and Ibn Ishaq) narrate it from al-Zuhri, from Ibn Ka'b bin Malik, as "mursal". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Except that Muhammad bin Ishaq named Ibn Ka'b in his narration: "'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abdullah bin Ka'b bin Malik". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) in Muslim (2543), attributed to the Prophet: "You will soon conquer a land in which the qirat is mentioned, so treat its people well, for they have a covenant of protection and ties of kinship."
