Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4073

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "The first to speak (eloquent) Arabic, to lay the foundation of writing (the script) upon its pronunciation and manner of speech, and then to write it as a single connected text, like 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' with its letters joined, until later his descendants began to separate (write apart) its (words), was Isma'il bin Ibrahim (peace be upon them both)."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: This is how the narrator's name appears in our source manuscripts, and it is a mistake by transposition. The correct name is "Ibrahim bin Isma'il bin Abi Habibah". It is an old mistake, since it also occurs in the source manuscript of al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1503), in his narration of this report from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim.

Grading: Its chain is utterly "ruined" (talif, extremely weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Imran is "wahin" (very weak), as al-Dhahabi said in his "Talkhis", and his teacher "Ibrahim bin Isma'il bin Abi Habibah" is weak. Moreover, this report explicitly contradicts the other report of Ibn 'Abbas, narrated by al-Bukhari (3364), that Isma'il (peace be upon him) learned Arabic from (the tribe of) Jurhum, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar pointed out in "al-Fath" (10/83).
Important point: The correct view is that Isma'il (peace be upon him) was the first whose tongue was opened to "clear Arabic" (al-'Arabiyyah al-mubinah), when he was 14 years old, as 'Ali bin Abi Talib narrated with a chain that al-Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) declared hasan in "al-Fath" (10/83).
Note / Clarification: Al-Hafiz said: Being first here refers to being first in greater eloquence and clarity, not being first absolutely. That is, after he had learned the basics of Arabic from Jurhum, Allah inspired him with eloquent, clear Arabic, and he spoke it.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1503) from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Khaythamah narrated it in his "Tarikh" (as in Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi's "Jami' al-Athar" 2/28) from al-Zubayr bin Bakkar, from Ibrahim bin al-Mundhir, likewise.
