It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say before his death: "Indeed, Allah has taken me as His khalil (intimate friend), just as He took Ibrahim (peace be upon him) as a khalil."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: The words between the square brackets are not in the manuscripts but are present in "Talkhis al-Dhahabi". They are also present in the narration of Hilal bin al-'Ala' in Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (30/252), likewise in the narration of others from 'Abdullah bin Ja'far al-Raqqi, and in the narration of Zakariyya bin 'Adi from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Amr. Its being cited here, in the chapter on the mention of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), also requires that it be present.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih", and this chain is "strong" (qawi) because of Hilal bin al-'Ala', and he has been corroborated. Jundab is "Ibn 'Abdullah al-Bajali". Reference / Source: Muslim (532) and al-Nasa'i (11058) narrated it via Zakariyya bin 'Adi, from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Amr, with this same chain. So al-Hakim's including it as a supplement (istidrak) is an "oversight" on his part. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (6425) narrated it via Abu 'Abd al-Rahim Khalid bin Abi Yazid, from Zayd bin Abi Unaysah, from 'Amr bin Murrah, from 'Abdullah bin al-Harith, from Jamil al-Najrani, from Jundab (may Allah be pleased with him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): He added "Jamil al-Najrani" to the chain, even though 'Abdullah bin al-Harith explicitly stated in the narration of 'Ubaydullah bin 'Amr that Jundab narrated it to him (directly). So the narration of Abu 'Abd al-Rahim falls under "al-mazid fi muttasil al-asanid" (i.e., a connected chain into which a narrator has been added by mistake).
