It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah: "Then Adam received from his Lord words, and He accepted his repentance" [Surah al-Baqarah: 37], that he said: Adam (peace be upon him) said: "O my Lord, did You not create me with Your hand?" Allah said: "Yes, indeed." He said: "O my Lord, did You not breathe into me of Your spirit?" Allah said: "Yes, indeed." He said: "O my Lord, did You not settle me in Your Paradise?" Allah said: "Yes, indeed." He said: "O my Lord, does Your mercy not take precedence over Your anger?" Allah said: "Yes, indeed." Adam (peace be upon him) said: "Tell me, if I repent and reform, will You return me to Paradise?" Allah said: "Yes." So this is the meaning of His saying: "Then Adam received from his Lord words."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are thiqah, but there is disagreement over it from al-Hasan bin 'Atiyyah (Ibn Najih al-Qurashi). Al-Hasan bin 'Ali bin 'Affan narrated it from him as it appears here with the author (al-Hakim), while Abu Kurayb Muhammad bin al-'Ala' contradicted him, narrating it from al-Hasan bin 'Atiyyah, from Qays bin al-Rabi', from Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from al-Minhal; and this is more likely, because Yahya bin Adam and Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Firyabi narrated this report from Qays bin al-Rabi', from Ibn Abi Layla, from al-Minhal. Ibn Abi Layla had "poor memory" and Qays is "da'if". Moreover, it has come from Ibn 'Abbas through other routes, all of which are "criticised". It has also been narrated through another route from Sa'id bin Jubayr, going no further than him.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" (1/243) from Abu Kurayb, from al-Hasan bin 'Atiyyah, from Qays bin al-Rabi', from Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from al-Minhal bin 'Amr, likewise.
Reference / Source: Al-Ajurri narrated it in "al-Shari'ah" (755, 910) via Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Firyabi, and Abu al-Qasim bin Bishran in the second part of his "Amali" (1353) via Yahya bin Adam; both of them from Qays bin al-Rabi', from Ibn Abi Layla, from al-Minhal, likewise.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari (1/243) narrated it via 'Atiyyah al-'Awfi and via Sa'id bin Ma'bad, and Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (1/90-91) via al-Suddi, from someone who narrated it to him; all three from Ibn 'Abbas. All three of these routes are "da'if".
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim (1/91) narrated via Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from a man of Banu Tamim, who said: I came to Ibn 'Abbas and asked him: What were the words that Adam received from his Lord? He said: He was taught the rites of Hajj.
Grading: This too is "da'if" because the questioner is "unnamed" (mubham).
Reference / Source: Ibn Wahb narrated in the Tafsir section of "al-Jami'" (1/255), and Ibn Abi Hatim (1/91, 5/1454), via Khusayf bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Jazari, from Mujahid and Sa'id bin Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah, "Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance": (the words were) "They said: Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers" (al-A'raf: 23).
Reference / Source: Something similar was narrated by Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (785) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (7/434) via Abu Raja' al-Khurasani, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, regarding "Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance"; he said: "There is no god but You, glory be to You and praise be to You. My Lord, I have done evil and wronged myself, so forgive me, and You are the best of those who forgive. There is no god but You, glory be to You; I have done evil and wronged myself, so have mercy on me, and You are the most merciful of those who show mercy. There is no god but You, glory be to You. My Lord, I have done evil and wronged myself, so accept my repentance; indeed You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful."
