It is narrated from Muslim bin Yasar al-Juhani (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about this verse: "And when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their backs, their descendants" [Surah al-A'raf: 172]. Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Indeed, Allah Almighty created Adam (peace be upon him), then He passed His right hand over his back and brought forth from it offspring, and said: 'I have created these for Paradise, and they will do the deeds of the people of Paradise.' Then He passed His hand over his back and brought forth from it other offspring, and said: 'I have created these for the Fire, and they will do the deeds of the people of the Fire.'" A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, then what is the purpose of deeds?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, when Allah Almighty creates a servant for Paradise, He employs him in the deeds of the people of Paradise until he dies upon one of the deeds of the people of Paradise, and so he enters Paradise. And when He creates a servant for the Fire, He employs him in the deeds of the people of the Fire until he dies upon one of the deeds of the people of the Fire, and so he enters the Fire."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

2/ 273. Note / Clarification: This is the reading of Nafi', Abu 'Amr, Ibn 'Amir and Ya'qub, while the rest read it in the "singular". See Ibn al-Jazari's "al-Nashr" (2/273).
Note / Clarification: The words between the square brackets dropped out of our manuscripts; we restored them from al-Bayhaqi's "al-Qada' wa al-Qadar" (61), where he narrated it from the author (al-Hakim) with his chain and text, and they are established in the version of everyone who narrated this hadith via Malik.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting reports), but this chain is "da'if" (weak) because Muslim bin Yasar al-Juhani is "majhul" (unknown) and because it is "mursal", since this Muslim's narration from 'Umar is disconnected, as Abu Zur'ah stated decisively. Narrators other than Imam Malik added a man between him and 'Umar, "Nu'aym bin Rabi'ah", and this Nu'aym is also unknown. Reference / Source: It has already appeared at number (74) via Rawh bin 'Ubadah and via al-Qa'nabi, and at number (3295) via Ishaq bin Sulayman and via al-Qa'nabi, all three from Malik.
