It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty took the covenant from the back of Adam (peace be upon him) at Na'man, that is, at Arafah. He brought forth from his loins all the offspring He was to create, and scattered them before Him like small ants. Then He spoke to them face to face and said: 'Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes, we testify, lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection,' up to His saying: 'for what the falsifiers did.'" [Surah al-A'raf: 172-173]
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "jayyid" (good), even though most of those who narrated it from Kulthum bin Jabr made it "mawquf" on Ibn 'Abbas, and likewise more than one narrator narrated it from Sa'id bin Jubayr as mawquf; for something like this is not said on the basis of mere opinion. It is further supported by its coming as "marfu'" in other hadiths from others besides Ibn 'Abbas.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (4/2455) narrated it, and al-Nasa'i (11127) from Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahim; both (Ahmad and Ibn 'Abd al-Rahim) from al-Husayn bin Muhammad, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It has already appeared at number (75) via Wahb bin Jarir, from his father.
Note / Clarification: "Al-dharr": small red ants.
Note / Clarification: His word "qubulan" has been vocalised in several ways: with fathah on both the qaf and the ba', with dammah on both, with dammah on the first and fathah on the second, and with kasrah on the first and fathah on the second. All of them mean "before one's eyes" and "face to face".
