Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4025

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When this verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, We have given you al-Kawthar. So pray to your Lord and sacrifice" [Surah al-Kawthar: 1-2], the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Jibril (peace be upon him): "What is this sacrifice that my Lord has commanded me?" He said: "It is not a sacrifice; rather, He commands you that when you begin the prayer with the opening takbir, you raise both your hands when saying the takbir, and (raise them) also when you bow and when you raise your head from bowing, for this is our prayer and the prayer of the angels who are in the seven heavens." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Raising the hands is part of the humility about which Allah Almighty said: 'But they did not humble themselves before their Lord, nor do they supplicate humbly' [Surah al-Mu'minun: 76]."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is worthless (talif). Asbagh bin Nubatah is matruk, and Isra'il bin Hatim narrates fabricated reports (mawdu'at) from Muqatil bin Hayyan, as Ibn Hibban said in "al-Majruhin". Al-Dhahabi said in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak": Isra'il is a narrator of oddities who cannot be relied upon, and Asbagh is a Shi'i, matruk according to al-Nasa'i. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Talkhis al-Habir" (1/273): Its chain is da'if jiddan (very weak).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (2/75-76) recorded it from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim recorded it in his "Tafsir" (as in "Tafsir Ibn Kathir" 8/524, where Ibn Kathir called it "munkar jiddan"), Ibn al-A'rabi in "al-Mu'jam" (967), Ibn Hibban in "al-Majruhin" (1/177-178) and al-Wahidi in "al-Wasit" (4/562) via Wahb bin Ibrahim al-Fami (Ibn Abi Marhum), with this chain. Ibn al-A'rabi paired Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Warraq with Wahb. In the printed edition of "al-Majruhin", "al-Fami" has been corrupted into "al-Qadi".
Note / Clarification: As for placing the right hand over the left in prayer, this has come in the narrations of several Companions, and nothing contrary to it has come from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is the view of the majority of the Companions and the Successors. See "Fath al-Bari" (3/305).
