حدَّثنا أبو الفضل محمد بن إبراهيم المزكِّي إملاءً، حدَّثنا أحمد بن سَلَمة، حدَّثنا عبد الله بن الجرَّاح، حدَّثنا حماد بن زيد، عن عطاء بن السائب، عن سعيد بن جُبير، عن ابن عباس، أنَّ النبي ﷺ قال: "سألت الله مسألةً وددتُ أني لم أكن سألتُه، ذَكَرتُ رسلَ ربي فقلت: سخَّرت لسليمانَ الريحَ، وكلَّمتَ موسى، فقال ﵎: ألم أَجِدُك يتيمًا فآويتُك، وضالًا فهَدَيتُك، وعائلًا فأَغنيتُك؟ " قال: "فقلت: نَعَم، فَوَدِدتُ أن لم أسأَلْه" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I asked Allah a question which I wish I had not asked. I mentioned the messengers of my Lord and said: 'You subjugated the wind for Sulayman (peace be upon him), and You spoke to Musa (peace be upon him).' So Allah Almighty said: 'Did I not find you an orphan and give you shelter, and find you lost and guide you, and find you in need and make you self-sufficient?'" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I said: 'Yes (O my Lord).' So I wished that I had not asked Him that question."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده حسن من أجل عبد الله بن الجراح، وقد توبع. ورواية حماد بن زيد عن عطاء قبل اختلاطه.
Grading: Its chain is hasan on account of Abdullah bin al-Jarrah, and he has been corroborated. The narration of Hammad bin Zayd from 'Ata' dates from before 'Ata''s memory deteriorated (ikhtilat).
وأخرجه الطحاوي في "مشكل الآثار" (3966) و (3967)، وابن أبي حاتم في "تفسيره" - كما في "تفسير ابن كثير" 8/ 452 - والطبراني في "الكبير" (12289)، و "الأوسط" (3651)، والثعلبي في "تفسيره" 10/ 225، والبيهقي في "دلائل النبوة" 7/ 62 - 63، والواحدي في "أسباب النزول" (862)، والبغوي في "تفسيره" 8/ 455 - 456 من طرق عن حماد بن زيد، بهذا الإسناد قال فيه بعضهم عن حماد بن زيد: أظنه عن سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عبَّاس. وزاد فيه بعضهم: "ألم أشرح لك صدرك؟ ألم أرفع لك ذكرَك؟ ".
Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi recorded it in "Mushkil al-Athar" (3966, 3967), Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (as in "Tafsir Ibn Kathir" 8/452), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (12289) and "al-Awsat" (3651), al-Tha'labi in his "Tafsir" (10/225), al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (7/62-63), al-Wahidi in "Asbab al-Nuzul" (862) and al-Baghawi in his "Tafsir" (8/455-456), via various routes from Hammad bin Zayd, with this chain. Some of them, narrating from Hammad bin Zayd, said: "I think it is from Sa'id bin Jubayr from Ibn Abbas." And some added in it: "Did I not expand for you your breast? Did I not raise high your mention?"
