Amir bin Abdullah bin al-Zubayr narrates from his father that he said: Abu Quhafah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him): I see that you free weak slaves. If you want to do this, then free strong and powerful men who would defend you and stand up for you. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "O my father, I only intend what I intend (that is, the pleasure of Allah)." So these verses were revealed concerning him: "As for he who gives and fears (Allah), and affirms the best (reward), We will ease him towards ease," up to the saying of Allah Almighty: "And not for anyone with him is any favour to be recompensed, but only seeking the Face of his Lord, the Most High. And he is surely going to be pleased." [Surah al-Layl: 5-7, 19-21]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan". Technical note / Defect ('illah): What is "mahfuz" (preserved) in it is that it is the narration of Amir bin Abdullah bin al-Zubayr from some of his family members (unnamed), who said: Abu Quhafah said … This is how Ibn Hisham narrated it in "al-Sirah" (1/319) from Ziyad bin Abdullah al-Bakka'i; and likewise Ahmad bin Hanbal and his son narrated it in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (66, 291), and via him al-Wahidi in "Asbab al-Nuzul" (855) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (30/69), via Ibrahim bin Sa'd al-Zuhri; and al-Tabari in his Tafsir (30/221) via Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Muharibi. Both of them narrate it from Ibn Ishaq.
