أخبرنا أبو بكر محمد بن عبد الله الشافعي، حدَّثنا إسحاق بن الحسن، حدَّثنا أبو حُذَيفة، حدَّثنا سفيان، عن ابن جُرَيج، عن عطاء، عن ابن عبَّاس: ﴿لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ﴾، قال: في شِدَّة خَلْقٍ في ولادته، ونَبَتِ أسنانِه وسَرَره، ومعيشته وخِتَانِه (1). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty "We have certainly created man in hardship" [Surah al-Balad: 4], that he said: (What is meant is that man) has been created in toil and hardship through the stages of his birth, the growing of his teeth, the cutting of his navel cord, the struggle for a livelihood, circumcision and the like.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(1) خبر صحيح، وهذ إسناده حسن من أجل أبي حذيفة - وهو موسى بن مسعود النهدي - وقد توبع. سفيان: هو الثوري، وعطاء: هو ابن أبي رباح. Grading: This report is "sahih", and its chain is "hasan" because of Abu Hudhayfah (Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi), and he has been corroborated. Sufyan is "al-Thawri", and Ata' is "Ibn Abi Rabah". وأخرجه بنحوه الطبري 30/ 197 من طريق مهران الرازي، عن سفيان الثوري، بهذا الإسناد. Reference / Source: It was narrated in similar form by al-Tabari (30/197) via Mihran al-Razi, from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain. وأخرجه الضياء المقدسي في "المختارة" 11/ (253)، ومن طريقه ابن حجر في "تغليق التعليق" 4/ 3 من طريق سفيان بن عيينة، عن ابن جريج، به. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (11/253), and via him Ibn Hajar in "Taghliq al-Ta'liq" (4/3), via Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from Ibn Jurayj, likewise. والسَّرَر: هو الحبل السُّرِّي. Note / Clarification: "Al-sarar": the umbilical cord.
