It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty "And by the father and what he begot" [Surah al-Balad: 3], that he said: "The father" means Adam (peace be upon him), and "what he begot" means his offspring.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This report is "sahih", but from Mujahid (as mawquf), not from Ibn Abbas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ali bin Shadhan contradicted the author (al-Hakim) in his narration of the "Tafsir of Adam bin Abi Iyas" (from Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan al-Qadi, 2/758). And Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan, although there is weakness in him, has been "corroborated".
Reference / Source: For it was narrated from Warqa' (Ibn Umar al-Yashkuri) by al-Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab (in al-Tabari's Tafsir 30/195) and by Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Firyabi (as in "Taghliq al-Ta'liq" 4/368), and neither of them mentioned Ibn Abbas in it.
Reference / Source: Likewise Isa bin Maymun al-Jurashi narrated it from Abdullah bin Abi Najih, from Mujahid (in al-Tabari 30/195).
Reference / Source: As for Ibn Abbas, what is narrated from him (as with al-Tabari) is that he said: "Al-walid is the one who begets, and ma walad is the barren one who has no children."
Note / Clarification: Ibn Kathir said in his Tafsir: "What Mujahid and his companions held is good and strong …"
