Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3940

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the surah "He frowned and turned away" was revealed concerning the blind Companion Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him). He came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and began saying: (O Messenger of Allah,) guide me. At that time some of the great chiefs of the polytheists were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him (the blind Companion) and turned towards those chiefs, asking them: "Do you see any harm in what I am saying?" And they would say: No. So on this occasion "He frowned and turned away" [Surah Abasa: 1] was revealed.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it, because a group of narrators has narrated it from Hisham bin Urwah in mursal form.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih" up to Urwah bin al-Zubayr.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, there is disagreement over it from his son Hisham as to whether it is "mawsul" (connected) or "mursal".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi (3331) from Sa'id bin Yahya bin Sa'id with this chain, and he said: This hadith is "gharib", and in some copies: "hasan gharib". He also pointed to the irsal (the mursal form).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Hibban (535) via Abd al-Rahim bin Sulayman al-Kinani, from Hisham bin Urwah, likewise.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): So Yahya bin Sa'id al-Umawi and Abd al-Rahim bin Sulayman narrated it as "mawsul", and Yazid bin Sinan al-Ruhawi (one of the weak narrators) corroborated them in that, as Ibn Abd al-Barr mentioned in "al-Tamhid" (22/324); and so did Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir, though there is disagreement from him, as al-Daraqutni mentioned in "al-'Ilal" (14/174, 3516).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Malik (in "al-Muwatta'" 1/203), Ibn Jurayj and Waki' contradicted them (as Ibn Abd al-Barr mentioned): they narrated it from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, who said: ﴿عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّى﴾ [He frowned and turned away] was revealed … So they narrated it as "mursal". This is what al-Daraqutni, Ibn Abd al-Barr and al-Dhahabi in "al-Talkhis" judged to be correct.
