It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he was asked about this verse: "Indeed, it throws sparks like the qasar" [Al-Mursalat: 32], and he said: In the days of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) we used to gather pieces of wood two or three cubits long into a heap and store them away for the winter, and we called it "al-qasar". The narrator said: I also heard Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), when he was asked about "yellow camels (jimalatun sufr)" [Al-Mursalat: 33], say: It refers to the thick ropes of ships that are joined to one another until they become as thick as the waists of men.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it!

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: It is with a fathah on the "qaf" and the "sad" (qasar), and this is the reading of Ibn 'Abbas. Ibn Jinni mentioned it in "al-Muhtasab fi Tabyin Wujuh Shawadhdh al-Qira'at" (2/346). "Al-qasar": the roots (bases) of trees; its singular is "qasarah".
Note / Clarification: In the printed edition it is "naqsur al-khashab", i.e. with the addition of "al-khashab", although it is not in any of our manuscripts, nor in al-Bayhaqi's narration from the author (al-Hakim) ("al-Ba'th wa al-Nushur" 521); it is, however, established in al-Bukhari's narration.
Grading: This report is "sahih", and its chain is "hasan" because of Abu Hudhayfah (Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi), and he has been corroborated. Sufyan is "al-Thawri". Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari narrated it (4932) from Muhammad bin Kathir al-'Abdi, and (4933) by way of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan, both from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this same chain. So al-Hakim's including it in the Mustadrak is an "oversight" on his part.
