Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak) because of Talhah bin 'Amr (Ibn 'Uthman al-Hadrami), for he is "matruk", and it is for this reason that al-Dhahabi declared it defective in his "Talkhis". 'Ata' is "Ibn Abi Rabah".
Reference / Source: Al-Wahidi narrated it in "al-Tafsir al-Wasit" (4/412) from Abu Bakr al-Wa'iz, from al-Hakim Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim narrated in his Tafsir (7/2218) by way of Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn, from Talhah bin 'Amr, from 'Ata', who said: "The first mountain placed on the earth was Abu Qubays". And Talhah is matruk, as has passed.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (14/91) and al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (2/469) likewise narrated it in abridged form by way of Abu Nu'aym, from al-Harith bin Ziyad, from 'Ata', as his own saying. Abu Hatim al-Razi declared al-Harith bin Ziyad majhul, as in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (3/75).
Reference / Source: Abu 'Arubah al-Harrani likewise narrated it in "al-Awa'il" (5) by way of 'Abd Allah bin Muslim bin Hurmuz, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas. And Ibn Hurmuz is "da'if".
Reference / Source: Al-'Uqayli (907), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3698), and by their route Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (35/133, 134), narrated by way of Sulayman bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Dimashqi, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Ali bin 'Ajlan, from Ibn Jurayj, from 'Ata', from Ibn 'Abbas as "marfu'": "The first spot placed on the earth was the site of the House (the Ka'bah), then the earth was spread out from it; and the first mountain that Allah placed on the earth was Abu Qubays, then the mountains were spread out from it".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This Ibn 'Ajlan was declared thiqah by Sulayman bin 'Abd al-Rahman, who narrates from him, but al-'Uqayli said in "al-Du'afa'": "He is unknown in transmitting hadith; his hadith is not preserved except from 'Ata' as his own saying". And al-Dhahabi declared him majhul in "Diwan al-Du'afa'".
Note / Clarification: "Al-khashafah" (singular of "khashaf"): stones that grow (protrude) out of the ground; it is also narrated with the undotted "ha'" (hashafah).
