It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited from the opening verse of Surah al-Dahr, "Has there come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing worth mentioning?" [Al-Insan: 1], to its end. Then he said: "I see what you do not see, and I hear what you do not hear. The heaven creaks, and it has the right to creak, for there is not in it a space the size of four fingers except that an angel is placing his forehead in prostration before Allah. By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much, and you would not take pleasure in your women on your beds; rather, you would go out into the open plains, crying out in supplication before Allah Almighty." (Sayyiduna Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, further said:) By Allah, I wish that I were a tree that would be cut down.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: It is like this in our manuscripts, while in the printed edition, in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (7/52) and likewise in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (764) (where he narrated it from the author (al-Hakim)) it is "mawdi' qadr" (with "r").
Grading: This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi". Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah except Ibrahim bin Muhajir, who has some "softness" (lin); he is hasan in hadith in corroborating chains and supporting reports. But this chain is "munqati'", because Muwarriq al-'Ijli did not hear from Abu Dharr al-Ghifari. Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (4190) narrated it from Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah, from 'Ubayd Allah bin Musa, with this same chain - without the recitation. Reference / Source: Ahmad (35/21516) narrated it likewise from Aswad bin 'Amir, and al-Tirmidhi (2312) by way of Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri, both from Isra'il. Aswad bin 'Amir made clear that the words at its end: "By Allah, I wish I were a tree that is cut down" are the words of Abu Dharr, which became "mudraj" (inserted) at the end of the hadith. Al-Tirmidhi also pointed to this after his narration and said: This hadith is "hasan gharib". Reference / Source: It will come later at number (8847) by way of Sa'id bin Mas'ud from 'Ubayd Allah bin Musa. Reference / Source: Its second part will come later at number (8939) by way of Yunus bin Khabbab, from Mujahid, from Abu Dharr as "mawquf". Reference / Source: See its takhrij there. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Parts of it are supported (as a shahid) by the hadith of Hakim bin Hizam narrated by al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" (1134) and al-Tabarani (3122), and its chain is "qawi". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (6485), Ahmad (12/7499) and others. (8103). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the hadith of Abu al-Darda' that will come later with the author at number (8103). Note / Clarification: "Attat": derived from "al-atit", which is the creaking sound of a camel saddle and the like when something heavy is placed on it. (What is meant here is the heaven creaking under the weight of the angels.) Note / Clarification: "Al-su'udat": roads (paths). Note / Clarification: "Taj'arun": that is, you would cry out and call for help.
