It is narrated from Abu al-Za'ra' (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Dajjal was mentioned in the presence of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: O people, at the time of his emergence you will split into three groups. Then Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said (describing the state of the people of Hell): O disbelievers! "What put you into Saqar? They will say: We were not of those who prayed, nor did we feed the poor, and we used to indulge (in falsehood) with those who indulged, and we used to deny the Day of Recompense, until there came to us the certainty (death). So the intercession of the intercessors will not benefit them" [Al-Muddaththir: 42-48]. Then Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do you see any good in these (people of Hell) such that they would not be left there? When Allah Almighty wills that none (of the disbelievers) should come out of it any more, He will change their faces and their colours. Then a man from among the believers will bend down (to bring someone out) and say: O my Lord! And Allah will say: "Whoever recognizes someone, let him bring him out." So he will look carefully but will not recognize anyone. Then a man (from the people of Hell) will call out to him: O so-and-so, I am so-and-so! And he will say: "I do not know (you)." At that time they will say: "Our Lord, bring us out of it; then if we return (to disbelief), we will indeed be wrongdoers" [Al-Mu'minun: 107]. Then Allah Almighty will say: "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me" [Al-Mu'minun: 108]. When Allah has said this, Hell will be closed over them, and after that no one at all will be able to come out of it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is "layyin" (soft, i.e. weak). No one narrated from Abu al-Za'ra' ('Abd Allah bin Hani' al-Kufi) other than his sister's son Salamah bin Kuhayl. Ibn Sa'd, al-'Ijli and Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah, but al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh" (5/221): "He is not corroborated in his hadith" (meaning this hadith). Details of the narration: This hadith is a piece of a long hadith that will come later with the author (al-Hakim) at numbers (8729) and (8986); see its takhrij there.
