Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3902

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "They almost became a crowd around him" [Al-Jinn: 19], that he said: They (the jinn) would bow when he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed and prostrate when he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated; that is, he was referring to the jinn.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih", but there is a "mistake" (wahm) in its wording. For those who "kadu yakununa 'alayhi libada" (almost crowded upon him) were the "jinn", whereas those who were bowing with his bowing and prostrating with his prostration were the "Companions" of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Reference / Source: This is how Abu 'Awanah al-Yashkuri narrated it, from Abu Bishr Ja'far bin Abi Wahshiyyah, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, as in Ahmad (4/2431) and al-Tirmidhi (3323 m), and al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan sahih".
Reference / Source: Similar to this narration of Abu 'Awanah, al-Tabari narrated it in his Tafsir (29/118) from Muhammad bin Humayd, from Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid, from Mughirah, from Ziyad, from Sa'id bin Jubayr - without mentioning Ibn 'Abbas in it - and Ibn Humayd has some "weakness".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mughirah is "Ibn Miqsam al-Dabbi" and Abu Ma'shar is "Ziyad bin Kulayb al-Tamimi".
