Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3900

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions while he was in Makkah: "Whoever among you would like to be present tonight at the affair of the jinn, let him do so." None of them came except me. So we set out, until, when we reached the upper part of Makkah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) drew a line for me with his blessed foot, then ordered me to sit within it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went on until he stood and began reciting the Qur'an. Then many dark, shadow-like figures covered him (peace and blessings be upon him) and came between me and him (peace and blessings be upon him), until I could not even hear his (peace and blessings be upon him) voice. Then they began to leave, and went off breaking apart like pieces of cloud, until a small group of them remained. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished at dawn, went and relieved himself, then came to me and said: "What became of the group?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, there they are. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) took a bone and some dung and gave it to them as provision. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade anyone from cleaning himself after relieving himself (istinja') with a bone or dung.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if". No one other than Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri is known to have narrated from Abu 'Uthman bin Sannah. And Abu Salih 'Abd Allah bin Salih (although there is some weakness in his memory) is "mutaba'" (one who has been corroborated).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (2/230) from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Fakihi narrated it in "Akhbar Makkah" (2316), as did al-Nasa'i (38), al-Tabari in his Tafsir (26/32), al-Tahawi in "Ma'ani al-Athar" (1/123), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (6924), Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (67/74-75) and al-Mizzi in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" (34/67-68), by way of 'Abd Allah bin Wahb; al-Tabari (26/32) by way of Abu Zur'ah al-Misri; and Abu al-Shaykh in "al-'Azamah" (1102) (and from him Abu Nu'aym in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 263) by way of 'Uqayl bin Khalid. All three (Ibn Wahb, Abu Zur'ah, 'Uqayl) narrate it from Yunus bin Yazid likewise. In al-Nasa'i and al-Tahawi it is abridged to the story of the prohibition of cleaning oneself (istinja') with a bone or dung. And this point (about istinja') is "sahih"; it has come in the hadith of 'Alqamah from Ibn Mas'ud referred to earlier.
Reference / Source: The story of Ibn Mas'ud on the Night of the Jinn, with differing wordings, was narrated by Ahmad (6/3788) by way of Sulayman al-Taymi, from Abu Tamimah, from 'Amr (the narrator doubted whether he is al-Bikali), from 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud. There is criticism of its chain, and al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir cited it in his Tafsir of Surah al-Ahqaf and said: "There is severe strangeness in it".
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (2861) narrated it by way of Ja'far bin Maymun, from Abu Tamimah al-Hujaymi, from Abu 'Uthman, from Ibn Mas'ud, and graded it "hasan", although it contains Ja'far bin Maymun, who is not strong in hadith.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (2871) by way of Abu Sallam Mamtur al-Habashi, who said: One whom 'Amr bin Ghaylan al-Thaqafi told narrated to me, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Grading: This chain is "da'if" because of the vagueness of the narrator who reports from 'Amr.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani also narrated it in "al-Awsat" (8995) from al-Miqdam bin Dawud, from 'Abd Allah bin Salih, from Musa bin 'Ulayy bin Rabah, from his father, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of al-Miqdam, the compiler's (al-Tabarani's) teacher, and there is also some weakness in the memory of 'Abd Allah bin Salih. Rawh bin Salah al-Misri also narrated it from Musa bin 'Ulayy (in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 2/231), and this Rawh is "da'if" and a narrator of munkar reports.
Reference / Source: It was narrated in abridged form in al-Bayhaqi ("Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 2/231-232) by way of Mustamirr bin al-Rayyan, from Abu al-Jawza', from Ibn Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of Abu al-Jawza' (Aws bin 'Abd Allah al-Raba'i) from Ibn Mas'ud is "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All these routes stating that Ibn Mas'ud was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Night of the Jinn are "subject to criticism". This contradicts what 'Alqamah bin Qays al-Nakha'i (the student of Ibn Mas'ud) narrated from him, that he denied it (as has passed). Similarly, al-Bukhari narrated in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/201) from Shu'bah, from 'Amr bin Murrah, who said: I asked Abu 'Ubaydah (the son of Ibn Mas'ud): Was your father with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Night of the Jinn? He said: "No". See "Fath al-Bari" (11/324-325).
