Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3899

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) neither recited the Qur'an to the jinn nor saw them. Rather, he (peace and blessings be upon him) set out with a group of his Companions intending to go to the market of Ukaz, and (at that time) a barrier had been placed between the devils and the news of heaven, and burning flames (shooting stars) had been sent against them. So they (the devils) returned to their people and said: This is surely something new that has happened, so spread out across the east and west of the earth and see what this thing is that has happened. So they set out across the east and west of the earth, searching for this thing that had come between them and the news of heaven. Then, when they returned (having passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) to their people, they said: "Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur'an, which guides to right conduct, so we have believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord" [Al-Jinn: 1-2]. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) this verse: "Say: It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened (to my recitation)" [Al-Jinn: 1]; and it was only the speech of the jinn that was revealed to him (peace and blessings be upon him).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it in this wording! However, Imam Muslim alone recorded it at length, in words other than these, through the narration of Dawud bin Abi Hind, from al-Sha'bi, from Alqamah, from Abdullah bin Mas'ud. And Imam Bukhari recorded, through the narration of Shu'bah, from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim, that he said: I asked Alqamah: Was Abdullah bin Mas'ud with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Night of the Jinn? And he mentioned a few words about it. And a hadith is narrated from Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), which trustworthy imams have narrated through an unknown man, that he was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Night of the Jinn.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: The word "wa-magharibiha" is taken from the printed edition; the margin of ('A) proposes it and marks it as correct, while it is missing from (Z), (S) and (B).

Grading: This hadith is "sahih", and its chain is "qawi" because of 'Abd al-Malik bin Muhammad Abu Qilabah al-Raqashi.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (4/2271), al-Bukhari (773, 4921), Muslim (449), al-Tirmidhi (3323), al-Nasa'i (11560, 11561) and Ibn Hibban (6526) narrated it by various routes from Abu 'Awanah with this same chain. So al-Hakim's including it in the Mustadrak is an "oversight" on his part.

Reference / Source: Number (450) (150-151), and at its beginning it is from 'Alqamah, who said: I asked Ibn Mas'ud: Was any of you present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Night of the Jinn? He said: "No". See "Musnad Ahmad" (7/4149).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is an "oversight" by the author (al-Hakim) (may Allah have mercy on him), for al-Bukhari did not narrate it by this route. It is in al-Shashi's "Musnad" (332), and in it: I asked 'Alqamah: Was 'Abd Allah (bin Mas'ud) with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Night of the Jinn? He said: "I wish our companion ('Abd Allah) had been there" (meaning he was not).
Reference / Source: It is in Muslim (450/152) by way of Abu Ma'shar Ziyad bin Kulayb, from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, from 'Alqamah, from 'Abd Allah, who said: "I was not with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Night of the Jinn; I wished that I had been with him".
