It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "And He made the moon therein a light" [Nuh: 16], that he said: Its (the moon's) face is toward the Throne of Allah and its back is toward the earth.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if", because it has an "'illah". That is, Hudbah bin Khalid differed from 'Affan bin Muslim in its chain. Hudbah narrated it (as in Abu al-Shaykh's "al-'Azamah" 614) from Hammad bin Salamah, from 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, from Yusuf bin Mihran, from Ibn 'Abbas. This narration is "preponderant" (rajih) over 'Affan's narration (from Hammad, from Yunus, from Yusuf). Although Hudbah and 'Affan are both thiqah in narrating from Hammad bin Salamah, Hudbah has the distinction that he had two copies of Hammad's hadith, one arranged by his teachers and the other by subject, so in case of disagreement he is given precedence regarding Hammad. His narration is further supported by the fact that Ahmad bin Hanbal, Abu Dawud and Abu Hatim al-Razi mentioned that no one is known to have narrated from Yusuf bin Mihran other than 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, and Ibn Jud'an is "da'if".
Reference / Source: Similarly, Abu al-Shaykh (619) narrated it by way of al-Husayn bin Waqid, from Ma'mar, from Qatadah, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "Its face illuminates the heavens and its back illuminates the earth".
Grading: This chain is "munqati'", as Qatadah did not hear from Ibn 'Abbas.
