Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3887

It is narrated that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was asked about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "On the Day when the shin will be laid bare" [Al-Qalam: 42], and he said: "When some meaning of the Qur'an is hidden from you, then seek it in poetry, for it is the register (diwan) of the Arabs. Have you not heard the words of the poet: 'O Anaq, be patient, for this is an evil that still remains; your people have established for me the practice of striking necks, and war has risen up among us in its full severity (upon its "shin").' Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: This refers to the Day of Resurrection, which will be a day of extreme distress and severity."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and it is more worthy than a hadith narrated from Ibn Mas'ud with a sahih chain, which I did not consider appropriate to narrate in this place.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: These (words) had dropped out of the author's (al-Hakim's) narration and of al-Bayhaqi's "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (746) from him; we have supplied them from some books of Tafsir and Qur'anic sciences, and with them the metre (of the verse of poetry) is correct.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Usamah bin Zayd, who is "al-Laythi".
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (746) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain. It is in Ibn al-Mubarak's "al-Zuhd" (narration of Nu'aym, number 361) in abridged form, containing the verse and its interpretation but not the story of the poetry. Likewise al-Tabari recorded it via him in his Tafsir (29/38) from Muhammad bin Ubayd al-Muharibi.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Sunan" (10/241) and "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1560), and Abu Sa'd al-Sam'ani in "Adab al-Imla' wa al-Istimla'" (p. 71), via Waki', and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "al-Jami' li-Akhlaq al-Rawi" (1603) via Abd Allah bin Farrukh; both narrate it from Usamah bin Zayd, in abridged form, with the statement of Ibn Abbas: "When one of you recites something from the Qur'an and does not know its interpretation, let him seek it in poetry, for it (poetry) is the register (diwan) of the Arabs".
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya recorded it in abridged form in "al-Ahwal" (118), also via Waki', from Usamah bin Zayd, with the words: "(The uncovering of the shin refers) to severity; have you not heard the poet's saying: And war stood with us upon its shin (i.e. it became intense)".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The interpretation of this verse is reported from Ibn Abbas in the same way as Ikrimah narrated it from him, through several routes mentioned by al-Tabari, which strengthen one another.

Note / Clarification: Perhaps he is referring to what Abd al-Razzaq narrated in his Tafsir (2/310) from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Salamah bin Kuhayl, from Abu Sadiq al-Azdi, from Ibn Mas'ud, that he said about this verse: "That is, His (Allah's) shin". There is no harm in Abu Sadiq, but his narration from Ibn Mas'ud is "munqati'". A similar narration is also reported from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i from Ibn Mas'ud (in Abu Ya'la al-Farra''s "Ibtal al-Ta'wilat" 161), and Ibrahim did not live in the time of Ibn Mas'ud.
