It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, "cruel, and moreover of doubtful birth (zanim)" [Al-Qalam: 13], that he said: "('Zanim' is one who) is known for his evil just as a goat is known by the piece of flesh hanging from its ear ('zanamah')."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Ahmad bin Mihran al-Razi. Abu Ishaq is "Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i", the grandfather of Isra'il.
Reference / Source: Adam bin Abi Iyas recorded it in his Tafsir (2/688) from Isra'il, and al-Khara'iti in "Masawi' al-Akhlaq" (229) via Abd Allah bin Raja', from Isra'il, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his Tafsir (29/26) via Sharik al-Nakha'i, from Abu Ishaq, in the same way.
Reference / Source: Another interpretation of this verse is reported from Ibn Abbas, recorded by al-Bukhari (4917) and al-Nasa'i (11552) via Mujahid, that Ibn Abbas said about this verse: "A man of Quraysh who had a zanamah (a dangling piece of the ear) like the zanamah of a goat".
Note / Clarification: "Al-zanamah": the piece cut from a goat's ear and left hanging from it; it is also the lump of flesh that dangles at a goat's throat as though attached to it. (See: "al-Nihayah" by Ibn al-Athir, root: z-n-m).
