It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Hisham bin Amir that he asked the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, "And indeed you are of a great moral character" [Al-Qalam: 4]: O Mother of the Believers, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: Do you not read the Qur'an? I said: Of course. She said: "Indeed, the character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the Qur'an."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Reference / Source: Ahmad (42/25302) and Muslim (746) recorded it via Abd al-Razzaq with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hakim's including it in al-Mustadrak is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part (since it is already in Muslim).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (43/26219) and Abu Dawud (1342) recorded it via Hammam bin Yahya, and Muslim (746) via Hisham al-Dastuwa'i; both narrate it from Qatadah. With Muslim and Abu Dawud it is part of a long hadith.
