Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3840

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that they both testified about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the use of gourd vessels (dubba'), vessels of hollowed palm wood (naqir), green glazed jars (hantam) and pitch-coated vessels (muzaffat). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, refrain from it." [Al-Hashr: 7]
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with these additional words.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded it in 5/ (3300) from Yazid bin Harun, and Imam al-Nasa'i in (5133 and 11514) through the chain of Ahmad bin Sulayman al-Ruhawi from Yazid bin Harun, in the same way.
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (1997/46) recorded it via Marwan bin Mu'awiyah, and Abu Dawud (3690) via Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad; both of them narrate it from Mansur bin Hayyan.
Note / Clarification: These narrations do not contain the recitation (part of a Qur'anic verse) whose addition the author (al-Hakim) pointed out.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (4/ 2499, 2771), Muslim (17/ 41) and al-Nasa'i (5038, 5039, 5049) recorded it via Habib bin Abi Amrah; Imam Ahmad (4/ 2650) via Abu Bishr Ja'far bin Abi Wahshiyyah; and Muslim (17/ 40) and al-Nasa'i (5047) via Habib bin Abi Thabit.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): These three shaykhs narrate it from Sa'id bin Jubayr, and he from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) alone, and these too do not mention the recitation.
Details of the narration: This narration appears in abridged form, mentioning only the prohibition of the "hantam" (green jar), in the following books: Ahmad (9/ 5090), al-Nasa'i (5109) and Ibn Hibban (5403) via Ayyub; also Ahmad (10/ 5819, 5916, 6416), Muslim (1997/ 47) and Abu Dawud (3691) via Ya'la bin Hakim; and Ahmad (10/ 5954) via Qatadah.
Important point: These three shaykhs narrate it through Sa'id bin Jubayr from Ibn Abbas and Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Narrations through other routes about the prohibition of making nabidh in gourd vessels (dubba'), hollowed wooden vessels (naqir), green jars (hantam) and pitch-coated vessels (muzaffat) are found from Ibn Abbas and Ibn Umar, scattered in the "Sahihayn" and other books.
Note / Clarification: The purpose of the prohibition of these things (vessels) was the making of nabidh in them (a drink prepared by soaking dates or raisins).
General principle: This ruling has now been abrogated, as we have explained in detail in our commentary on the hadith of Abu Jamrah al-Duba'i from Ibn Abbas in "Musnad Ahmad" 3/ (2020).
