حدثنا علي بن حَمْشَاذَ العَدْل، حدثنا محمد بن المغيرة السُّكَّري بهَمَذان، حدثنا القاسم بن الحَكَم العُرَني، حدثنا عبيد الله بن الوليد، عن مُحارِب بن دِثَار، عن ابن عمر قال: أُهديَ لرجلٍ من أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ رأسُ شاةٍ فقال: إِنَّ أخي فلانًا وعيالَه أحوَجُ إلى هذا منّا، قال: فبَعَثَ إليه، فلم يَزَلْ يَبْعَثُ إليه واحدٌ إلى آخرَ حتى تداوَلَها سبعةُ أبياتٍ، حتى رَجَعَت إلى الأول، فنزلت: ﴿وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ بِهِمْ خَصَاصَةٌ﴾ إلى آخر الآية [الحشر: 9] (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the head of a sheep was given as a gift to a man among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Indeed my brother so-and-so and his family are more in need of this than we are. So he sent it to him. In this way the head kept passing from one to another until, after going round seven households, it came back to the first house. Then this verse was revealed: "And they give preference to others over themselves, even though they are in need." [Al-Hashr: 9]
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده ضعيف بمَرَّة من أجل عبيد الله بن الوليد الوصّافي، فإنه متفق على ضعفه خاصة في محارب بن دثار، وبه أعلّه الذهبي في "تلخيصه".
Grading: Its chain is severely (bi-marrah) weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The cause of its weakness is Ubayd Allah bin al-Walid al-Wassafi, whose weakness is agreed upon, especially in his narration from Muharib bin Dithar. Imam al-Dhahabi also declared it defective on this basis in "al-Talkhis".
وأخرجه البيهقي في "شعب الإيمان" (3204) عن أبي عبد الله الحاكم بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3204) through Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
وأخرجه الطبراني في "الجود والسخاء" (80)، والواحدي في "أسباب النزول" (810)، وقِوام السنة في "الترغيب والترهيب" (1556) من طريقين عن القاسم بن الحكم، به.
