Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3839

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the expedition of Banu al-Nadir (who were a group of the Jews) took place six months after the Battle of Badr. Their dwellings and date-palm groves were in an outlying area of Madinah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) besieged them until they agreed to exile, on the condition that they could take as much goods and property as the camels could carry, except "al-halqah", that is, weapons. So Allah Almighty revealed these verses concerning them, from "Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth glorifies Allah" up to "at the first gathering. You did not think that they would leave" [Al-Hashr: 1, 2]. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fought them until a settlement was made with them on exile, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) exiled them to Syria. They were from a tribe that had never before faced exile, and Allah had decreed this for them; had it not been so, Allah would have punished them in this world with killing and captivity. As for His saying "at the first gathering", this exile of theirs to Syria was the first gathering (hashr) in this world.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of Zayd bin al-Mubarak and the narrators below him.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, the mention of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in it is "ghayr mahfuz" (not preserved, i.e. a mistake), as Imam al-Bayhaqi stated explicitly in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 3/ 178 after narrating it from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim. We (the editors) say: likewise, the mention of 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr in it is not preserved either.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" 28/ 28 through Muhammad bin 'Abd al-A'la, from Muhammad bin Thawr, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, as "a saying of al-Zuhri" (maqtu').
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Muhammad bin 'Abd al-A'la was corroborated in narrating it from al-Zuhri as "mursal" by 'Abd al-Razzaq (Tafsir: 2/ 282) and by Muhammad bin Kathir al-San'ani in Abu 'Ubayd's "al-Amwal" (18) and Ibn Zanjawayh's "al-Amwal" (57); all of them narrated it from Ma'mar from al-Zuhri as his own saying.
Note / Clarification: In the printed edition of "Musannaf 'Abd al-Razzaq" (9732), "from Ma'mar from al-Zuhri from 'Urwah" has been printed by mistake (whereas the correct form is only al-Zuhri's saying).
Reference / Source: Abu 'Ubayd (19), Ibn Zanjawayh (58), Ibn Abi Hatim (according to Tafsir Ibn Kathir 8/ 85) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" 3/ 176-177 narrated it by way of Abu Salih 'Abd Allah bin Salih, from al-Layth bin Sa'd, from 'Uqayl bin Khalid, as a saying of Imam al-Zuhri (maqtu').
Note / Clarification: Except Ibn Abi Hatim, who also mentioned 'Urwah (bin al-Zubayr) in his narration.
Reference / Source: Abu 'Awanah narrated it in his "Sahih" (6964) by way of al-Hajjaj bin Abi Mani', from 'Ubayd Allah bin Abi Ziyad (al-Hajjaj's grandfather), from al-Zuhri, as "a saying of al-Zuhri".
